Volunteer position at the MIC

The NICHD Microscopy & Imaging Core is looking for a motivated volunteer with backgrounds in at least two of the three disciplines of physics, chemistry and biology, to serve on the NIH Bethesda campus. Proficiency in oral and written English as well as good communication skills and attention to fine details are required. The position calls for a minimum of 20 hours per week over a period of one full year (or 40 hours weekly over 6 months).

The Core provides high-end light confocal and electron microscopy to over 120 users located in 40 laboratories within the NICHD and other Institutes. Further information can be found at http://mic.nichd.nih.gov. The volunteer will be trained in high resolution confocal microscopy, imaging of live cells, and advanced imaging techniques such as TIRF and two-photon imaging of live tissue sections and live animals, as well as electron microscopy sample processing, sectioning and imaging. He / she will also be coached on modern image analysis software and techniques including automation and three-dimensional reconstruction. Specific duties will be tailored to the individual’s tastes and abilities but may include routine instrument maintenance, user support, EM preparative and data analysis work.

This position is a unique opportunity to get extensive training in state-of the-art light and electron microscopy and receive an unparalleled exposure to the world-class biomedical research undertaken at the National Institute of Health. Although everyone is encouraged to apply, it is primarily targeted at individuals motivated to acquire technical skills for further employment. Anyone interested should send his or her CV with at least two references to:
